Plug-in air fresheners transform each room into a different paradise. They can make a kitchen feel lemony fresh, a bedroom feel calm and soothing, and so much more.
But those pesky things require a lot of refills, and just a few bucks here and there can truly add up! Plus, there’s the added frustration of actually remembering to buy the refills. If there’s no scent in the bulb, then it’s a total waste.
Jessica at Mom4Real was having trouble remembering to stock up on fragrance refills. Eventually about 7 of the plug-ins ended up in her drawer. She was just about to throw them away when she decided to try to fill them herself, in a last ditch effort to avoid wasting them.
“I wanted to go chemical free with my plug-in refill, and boy am I soooo glad that I did!” she wrote. This method is super simple and works with any brand of plug-in air freshener.
First, you’ll have to disassemble the plug-in, but don’t worry, it’s a lot easier than it sounds! You may need needle nose pliers or a butter knife to pry the wick out of the top of the air freshener. The wick will likely be a cloth or cotton stick, with a stopper near the top to prevent the liquid from leaking out.
Be careful not to get the wick wet because then it will expand and be impossible to get back into the bulb.
Choose the scent you want and fill the bulb with essential oils up to the halfway point. Jessica used a citrus scent for the kitchen, a lavender scent in the bedroom, and rosemary for the bathroom.
If you don’t want colorful oil, just use a clear oil in the scent of your choice.
Fill the rest of the bulb with water, leaving a little room at the top for the wick to displace the liquid.
Push the wick back in, making sure the stopper is secure, and give it a shake.
Now you can plug in your chemical-free, customized air freshener!
