A Chicago college student was mugged on a train for her iPhone, and claimed that nobody around her did anything to help.
DePaul University student Jessica Hughes said she was riding the Blue Line train around 10 a.m. when she spotted a suspicious man moving to a seat in front of her and looking her in the face.
“He jumps up from his chair, and goes on top of me, and asks me for my phone, but my phone was in my pocket, and I had my headphones on, so he was yanking at my headphones, and then he pushed me to the floor, and then started beating on my head,” she told WBBM. “He bit me on my left hand.”
Hughes said she called for help, but the two other men sitting in the train car did nothing to help.
“They just watched,” she said. “I feel like people just don’t want to get involved.” The 19-year-old said she would have been ashamed of herself if she saw it happen to someone else but failed to intervene.
The young woman’s father, Richard Amador, said his daughter could have easily been killed.
“It’s just shameful, like she said,” he told WBBM. “Definitely, I would jump in and help, no matter what the consequences, because it’s another human being.”
Many readers called on others to start protecting themselves in case they find themselves in a similar situation.
“’ll tell you what to do you go down take you a gun safety course get you a concealed weapons permit and start carrying you’re allowed to protect yourself if you must a couple caps on one or two you won’t have to worry about that again Lord forgive me if I’m wrong but this is got to stop,” one Mad World News reader commented on the site’s Facebook page.
Some readers said the reason that nobody helped her was because the attacker was black.
“The reason they didn’t step in wasn’t because of fear of being called a racist, it’s because they were cowards. No one should ever be scared to help someone because of an attacker’s skin color. Help the victim. Do whatever you have to, use anything available and bust their damn heads open,” one reader commented.
“These events are building up a hate war that the devil is behind. it’s sad they don’t realize that the devil is using them to commit these acts, but it will be them that God is going to hold responsible,” another added.
