There’s a warning being issued out of Kent, Washington where locals are being warned to NOT pick up any stray tennis balls that they may see lying around outdoors.
Police are issuing this warning after it’s been revealed that some people attempt to make homemade fireworks by taking existing fireworks, gutting out the insides and placing those insides into balls or pipes. Now sometimes the fireworks don’t go off as thought. These duds are oftentimes just left, rather than discarded. Thus you have a “tennis ball bomb” lying around. Here’s what the local police department in Kent are saying about these tennis ball bombs:
“A tennis ball bomb is very easy to identify. It is a real tennis ball that has some sort of fuse sticking out of it. The tennis ball could also be completely wrapped in duct tape with a fuse sticking out.” Dog owners should be especially concerned, as it is natural for dogs to go after stray balls. It’s best to call 911 right away when you see a tennis ball bomb. And even though the bomb was considered a “dud” and discarded in the street, this does not mean that it isn’t volatile and could still have explosive action. Matter of fact a Portland dog actually had such a ball explode in his mouth back in 2000, and as a result, he had to be put down. So it’s best to leave the ball alone and call authorities right away.
Stay safe this independence holiday and keep your eyes out for tennis ball bombs. Share with friends and family so they can be made aware of tennis ball bombs.
