Summer is my favorite season — I love the sun and the sweltering temperatures. But not everyone appreciates the heat.
In particular, women often suffer from swollen legs and feet during the hot summer months.
When the mercury goes up, the blood vessels dialate and the blood leaks into surrounding tissues. This helps your body cool itself.
But when the body is overheated, it has trouble bringing blood from the extremities back up to the heart — and it collects in the legs and especially the feet.
In addition, air travel, prolonged periods of sitting, and pregnancy can also cause your legs to swell.
Summer shoes and uncomfortable sandals don’t particularly help — something you’re probably painfully aware of.
Fortunately, there are some home remedies that can give your feet some relief this summer.
With the following four tips, you can make your life a lot easier!
1. Foot bath with mint
One effective method of soothing swollen feet is to soak them in cold water for three minutes and then rest them in hot water for a minute.
The more times you do this, the quicker you’ll notice a difference.
Another tip is to drop a few mint leaves into the footbath. The leaves are said to stimulate blood circulation in the feet and counteract leg cramps.
2. Epsom salt
Fill a foot bath with lukewarm water and add about 60 grams of Epsom salt. Soak your feet for 15 minutes and then wipe them carefully afterward.
According to the Livestrong, Epsom salt can relieve pain in the feet, remove foot odor, and soften the skin. And it can also extract excess fluid and fight blisters, calluses, and corns.
3. Apple cider vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is rich in potassium and can help reduce swollen legs and feet. The potassium in the vinegar supports the cells and brings the fluid in the legs into balance.
Mix apple cider vinegar with about 200 ml of water and an equal amount of vinegar. Dip a towel in the mix and then wrap it around your feet. Then let this compress sit for 30 minutes.
4. Chamomile oil
A massage with chamomile oil isn’t just relaxing, it can also reduce swelling in feet. Chamomile oil has anti-inflammatory properties and can be applied directly to the skin.
Massage the oil into your skin yourself — or ask your partner, if you have one!
With these four tips, your feet should be much better in no time! If the swelling doesn’t disappear, consult a specialist. But the least we can do is to share these tips so that more people can get some relief!
